Crabbing is an easy way to have fun with the family and introduce children to the wonders of marine ecology. You don't need very much equipment and there are plenty of places to hone your crabbing skills. You will need some string or handline, a bucket, a small fishing net, an old washing tablet bag and the bait - some fish or bacon will work fine. Firstly, fill your bucket with seawater, seaweed and some pebbles to help your crabs stay chilled out when you catch them. Next, put the bait in an old washing tablet bag and tie it to the string. Drop the bait into the water and let it hit the seabed. When you feel the crabs nibble, lift the line out of the water and put the net underneath so that it doesn’t fall back in. Then carefully place the crab in the bucket. Try not to have more than 10 in each bucket !
The underground Leprechaun and Fairy Cavern has its origins in a story from 1989 when a Leprechaun suit with 4 gold coins in the pocket was found on Foy mountain above Carlingford Co Louth. Beside it were some bones and an area of scorched earth. The man who found it, a local publican PJ O’Hare told a friend of his Mc Coilllte (Woods) what he had found. Mc Coillte was very sceptical about the existence of such beings and set out to prove that Leprechauns did not exist. Mc Coillte speaks to them regularly and he has built an underground cavern to connect with two old tunnels — one links with the Fairy Glen in Rostrevor and the other with Foy mountain, the home of Ireland's last remaining Leprechauns. Mc Coillte starts your journey with this story. There is parking at ” Shalom House” on Ghan Road opposite the Carlingford Sailing Club. You will find Mc Coillte - the Leprechaun Whisperer there. Carlingford is the ONLY place in the world that Leprechauns are protected!!!
The Carlingford Lough Greenway from Carlingford to Omeath opened in 2013. It hugs the coastline of Carlingford Lough along the old railway line. It offers amazing views of Slieve Foye Woods and the Cooley Mountains on one side and across the Lough to the majestic Mourne Mountains on the other . There is a 300m road section just outside Omeath but there is a footpath available - otherwise it is all off the main road.
A second 5.7km stretch of the Greenway from Victoria Lock to Newry through the Middlebank and Albert Basin was opened May 2018. In the next year or so, Omeath will connect to Victoria Lock and then to the Newry/Portadown Canal towpath creating a 52km cross-border Greenway. So when you visit Carlingford, take a stroll, a jog or a cycle along along our beautiful Greenway - you will be rewarded with some of the nicest scenery in the country! You can rent bikes in Carlingford !
Kevin Woods, known worldwide as 'The Leprechaun Whisperer and his family have created the 'Folklore Park', an admission free park for people to visit and enjoy with a small playground, fairy houses, giant seats and wonderful scenery looking out over Carlingford Lough. It is lovely to walk around and there are plenty of local legends and myths depicted in the signs and features in the small park. The park is also home to the ‘Proposal Stones’ - in ancient times certain rocks where young couples often sat were said to be close by fairy trees and forts and if you proposed near one of these stones, then the fairies would bring you luck and protection for your married life. The Folklore park is located on Ghan Road, Carlingford.
The Carlingford Lough Ferry sails between Greencastle, Co. Down and Greenore Co. Louth. Whenever my family manage to escape to the seaside, we immediately feel the insatiable urge to get onto the water ! There are many ways to satisfy these desires on Carlingford Lough. Louth Adventures are based at Carlingford Harbour and operate two types of boat tours. You can choose between a nice comfortable scenic tour on board 1940’s tug boat, Brienne - recently featured on Nevan's Irish Seafood Trails - or for the thrill seekers, a Rib Safari experience to get your heart racing ! Whichever you choose, you will have a great chance to enjoy the local wildlife including Finn, our resident Carlingford Lough dolphin.
Carlingford Sail Training Centre is based at Carlingford Marina and offers a broad range of possibilities for everyone. Whether you are new to sailing, need a refresher, or wish to expand your sailing skills, they have Irish Sailing Association (ISA) Certified Courses available that are perfect for you. Racing, cruising, adult learn to sail programs and Summer Sailing camps for children are on-water activities that can be enjoyed on Carlingford Lough.
There are a wide range of hiking trails for every fitness level here on the Cooley Peninsula. However , if you are going to try to get up to the top of Slieve Foye or simply prefer to be with a guide that knows the hiking trails like the back of her hand, we suggest that you avail of the services provide by local guide, Clodagh of Anam Tours. You’ll find Anam Tours on Facebook and Instagram and Clodagh leads walks all year round. Walking up the mountain on your own is of course FREE but free is watching the the rescue helicopter circling around as Greenore Coast Guard scramble up the mountain to rescue a lost or injured walker . There are always dangers for the unsuspecting.
The Cooley Peninsula is a fantastic destination for watersports lovers. Windsurfers and Kite Surfers are often seen taking to the water from Greer’s Quay or more often from Templetown Beach which is a Blue Flag beach. There you can swim from a shallow sandy beach and if you fancy a bit of harbour wall 'tombstoning'', then join the locals almost every evening around high tide and enjoy the thrill of jumping into the harbour ! There is plenty of 'freestyle action' going on if you just want to watch ! If you would like to try stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing or kayaking, then Carlingford Adventure Centre have them all on offer. We also offer fabulous conditions for scuba divers and snorkelers.
These are just a few of the water based activities available on Carlingford Lough and The Cooley Peninsula
